Senior Director, Communications

Description of Job:


The Senior Director, Communications will support the organization’s mission through creative and effective communications platforms and increase public awareness and support for high-quality charter public schools. The Senior Director will provide communications planning, materials and support on key CCSA initiatives and priorities.


Overview of Responsibilities:


The Senior Director, Communications will work directly with the Chief External Affairs Officer to develop, organize and execute a comprehensive, strategic and proactive communications and media outreach plan to increase visibility and support for both CCSA (501c3) and CCSA Advocates (501c4) organizational missions. This position works closely with CCSA staff members, media, charter school leaders and the broader charter school community and will have one direct report. This position reports to the Chief External Affairs Officer.


Essential Duties



  • Engage and support the boarder charter community: Engage the broad charter school community and empower charter school leaders, teachers, parents and supporters to tell their own stories in ways that build support for charter public schools and the movement’s advocacy priorities

    • Create collateral and training materials and identify opportunities for charter supporters speaking at community events.

    • Provide communications and media relations training to employees and members

    • Manage the operation of charter leaders, teachers, and parents to represent CCSA at public events

    • Provide general communications and media relations support to member schools

    • Support existing member schools in positive and proactive media outreach (i.e. national rankings, etc.)

    • Share best practices with charter schools in the region

    • Visit charter school sites to identify stories to share through a variety of communications platforms



  • Development and execution of communications programs: Plan, develop and execute a comprehensive communications program to support CCSA policy and advocacy priorities, community engagement and online communications

    • Help lead crisis management efforts and rapid response strategies

    • Develop and execute a regional communications and media outreach plan across California, including video and social media campaigns

    • Develop communications and media plans that coincide with state and federal legislation calendar



  • Build cooperative relationships: Facilitate cooperative relationships with educational, public sector, and community organizations as well as opinion leaders to project a positive image of the charter movement and the organizations

    • Maintain extensive media database and maintain/build strong relationships with the media regionally.



  • Support organizational initiatives, objectives and priorities

    • Identify regional success stories for proactive media outreach

    • Write op-ed articles, speeches, talking points, fact sheets; FAQs and other communications materials.

    • Coordinate editorial board meetings; prepare staff or CCSA surrogates for media interviews

    • Write, edit and/or review Association e-newsletters and other materials

    • Represent the organizations at meetings and public events

    • Ensure accurate and timely dissemination of information

    • Track and report ongoing media metrics

    • Perform related duties as assigned by the Chief External Affairs Officer



  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise one direct report

    • Sets goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with the organization’s plans and vision

    • Evaluate direct report’s performance and provide feedback

    • Fosters employee development by providing resources, tools and information.




Preferred Capabilities:



  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or related field

  • 8+ years of experience in public relations or journalism work

  • Published writer in major news publications

  • Legislative and education policy experience/background


Relevant experience for this position could include (but not limited to):



  • Campaign communications and media relations

  • Director, Communications for a non-profit and/or advocacy organization

  • Communications/PR role in a tandem 501c3/501c4 environment

  • Issue advocacy, grassroots engagement and/or online/mobile campaign experience


Knowledge of:



  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary

  • California education policy

  • The diversity of California’s population and effective ways to communicate with various demographic groups


Ability to:



  • Work in a political environment in support of candidates who support charter schools regardless of other political affiliations

  • Present information regarding priorities/initiatives in a proactive, complete and media-sensitive way in multiple formats (e.g., print, online, video, etc.)

  • Communicate with multiple stakeholder groups and familiarity with tailoring communications in a manner targeted to maximum impact with those stakeholders

  • Coordinate the quick turn-around of high-quality communications materials

  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action

  • Balance working as a team member with independent work with minimal supervision

  • Multi-task and complete work with multiple interruptions. Meet schedules and timelines

  • Maintain confidentiality of information

  • Ability to occasionally travel


Position will be open until filled.


Benefits and Salary


Salary range for this position is $88,740 – $102,000/year depending on experience. In addition, CCSA offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and vision coverage upon hire, 401K eligibility after the first 90 days of employment, 13 paid holidays, and generous paid time off.
